What is Wareham CORE? We are a group of Wareham citizens who have joined together to support outdoor recreation in our town. We believe that all children benefit from outdoor recreation. Playgrounds are more than just fun places for your child to spend some free time. They can help all kids, including those with learning and attention issues, develop important skills.
On the playground, children learn to communicate with other kids and practice conversation and vocabulary. Playgrounds can help them learn how to follow and change rules, share, and take turns as they make up games with other playmates. These kinds of social interactions are important to a developing child.
And let’s not forget the physical benefits of play. Lack of physical fitness and increasing weight in our youngsters is becoming a concern. Physical activity is a great help and in addition, it helps to develop motor skills such as balance and coordination.
Who is PBD? Wareham CORE is partnering with Play by Design (PBD). PBD is a playground design firm that specializes in working with communities to design and provide safe, affordable, and unique volunteer-built playgrounds for children of all abilities. The designers worked with CORE and the children of Wareham to design our new playground, and will also provide project management and on-site supervision of the volunteer work force during construction.
Play by Design produces custom designed play structures that are safe, affordable, and all-inclusive. Their work adheres to the highest standards of design, construction, and safety. Our new playground will be built in compliance with international standards as well as with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.
The virtually maintenance-free playground will be built with structural plastic lumber along with recycled plastic composite lumber. This lumber is environmentally friendly and arsenic-free.
PDB believes in the Community Build process because it "unifies communities and empowers their members by bringing them together to design, organize, and construct one-of-a-kind playgrounds." In addition, the playgrounds then become "treasured assets in their communities through a sense of pride, ownership, and accomplishment built into them by the hands of volunteers."
CORE's new Build Date at Lopes Playground is May, 2019! Also, here are tentative phases that are planned to further its completion.
